Quit Smoking Cigarettes – It’s Hard But Not Because of Nicotine Part 1
Lately, when I was interviewed about quitting, the host often ask: "Is the addiction to nicotine is not why most people are not able to successfully quit smoking?" They are surprised when I say that nicotine is an addictive substance is not real because it has the characteristics of an addictive substance. The drive or compulsion to smoke cigarettes is strictly psychological. Interviewers are surprised because the addiction to cigarettes (nicotine) has been used as a rationalization to explain why it is so hard to quit. The truth is that nicotine does not exhibit the characteristics of a physical addiction. The real cause of the difficulty to simply stop smoking cigarettes is the psychological mechanism of smoking. If you stop smoking and not eliminate this mechanism, you will still be a smoker who does not smoke now. It is the very reason that the smoker, after being off cigarettes for weeks or months, is forced to start over. In this article, I will discuss the dynamics of real physical addiction. You will see that nicotine does not fit into this category. In Part 2 of this article, I will discuss more details that show how nicotine is an addictive substance is not true and how the psychological mechanism of smoking is the power behind smoking. What is addiction? Any substance that alters the physiology of the body can be addictive. Many people accidentally become addicted to pain medicine so that we will use as an example. In our example, we have a person who has been seriously injured and is in great pain. Pain is the body's signal to our being aware that we have a problem to be corrected immediately. With modern medicine today, the injuries are treated quickly and effectively. However, while mechanical damage has not been repaired, the healing process that only the body can do, has not yet taken place. To make things easier for ourselves, take pain medicine. After all, we know that we are hurting and that has been treated, it is necessary to recall unpleasant pain. The chemicals in the medicine interfere with pain signals to the reduction of what we are most comfortable. If we take the pain medicine as directed, there is little chance of addiction. If the body is recovered in a timely manner, the pain medication is helping, because the healing process is to reduce the need for pain. What the patient does not realize is that every day in pain medicine, it becomes less and less effective! Why? Because the body is trying to do is the natural process of generation of pain. When is artificially suppressed, the body increases the pain signal. As healing takes place and reduction of pain intensity, this increase in the signal is not noticed by the patient. It is only when the healing process GAL, E. g. has an extended period of time that the patient feels the pain medication is not working so well. To achieve the same level of pain control requires more medicine. The patient's doctor will not allow this due to the problem of addiction. You should listen to your doctor. However, some people do not want to hear. They are hurting, what had been helped and want to take the same level of relief. Maybe I have a friend who had left on pain medicine and to persuade to give them because they need it. Not a good idea, but people do it. So on their own, increasing the dose. They have pain relief that they were initially. But the body does not like at all. Once again, increases the pain signal that weakens the effects of the medicine. If the patient got a lot of extra pain medication, continue to increase the doses for the same amount of relief. The body, a balance, continues to push the pain signal. At this point the person is in a dangerous situation. They can not simply stop the medication for pain, because if you have taken too long and increased the dose too, the physical reaction can be deadly! The potentially deadly tug of war: Council of pain medications Look at it as the tug of war game. The pain medication is on one side and the body is on the other. The side of the pain medicine adds a member (increased dose), the side of the body, adds a member (pressure is more), not to win the tug of war, but to get the marker back in the center . For the body, the pain medicine has gotten out of balance and used its biochemical and physiological resources for that back in balance. This is the reason why pain medication loses efficacy over time. This is technically known as habituation, physiological tolerance to a drug resulting from repeated use. What happens if you stop taking the pain medication cold turkey? In our pull the analogy of war, stopping cold turkey is like a hand, pain medication, release the rope. The part that still maintain the strength, body, kicks to the stack of riots. In the real tug of war, people still throw on the side slam itself possibly get hurt if you pull hard enough. In our example, your body is going to be confused with cell injury as possible! Solution to the problem you can not stop taking pain medication excessive cold-Turkey. This requires a stay in rehabilitation centers where the addict is medical monitoring and medication for pain decreased slowly over time. As it reduces the pain medication, reaction against the body is also reduced. The body is happy because it stays in balance, that's all I was trying to do anyway. You are happy because your body does not end with a confused mass! Chemical Addiction Patron Remember, the body always works to maintain balance. The technical term is homeostasis. Whenever the body is faced with a chemical that pushes him off balance, a force is applied against the balance back. The stronger the chemical, e. g. high doses of pain medication, the strongest of the body pushes back. You can not stop safely after excessive use of pain medications, without giving the body time to adjust slowly. Nicotine As you can see, nicotine simply does not fit this pattern. Nobody had a life threatening experience of being deprived of cigarettes. Of course, there have been many smokers say, "I'm dying for a cigarette." However, it is a physiological fact that a smoker will not die without a cigarette! In Part 2 of this article, we will discuss details that show why nicotine is chemically addictive and why the psychological mechanism of smoking is a real factor that makes it hard to quit.
